1. I got my new reading glasses and they are a marvel. They are the only ones I liked in the shop because they reminded me of my grandpa’s except his were held together by sticky tape. Notice the box they came in, blue velvet lined and fit for the crown jewels. The reading case itself is hand carved by elves from wood that comes from the Faraway Tree
2. If you missed last Tuesday’s Book Club on the ABC then it’s well worth catching when it gets repeated on Sunday at 4.30. Why? The Confederacy of Dunces was on there. Marieke Hardy’s Dunces-friendship-litmus test wouldn’t work for me because almost everyone I’ve foisted the book onto, hates it. What is WRONG with some people?! Augusten Burroughs and Germaine Greer were on there and Greer not only disparaged The Dunces but also the Rudd government. It was high drama indeed
3. Am I the ONLY person worried that scientists are going to try and recreate the Big Bang on the 10th September? Call me Henny Penny but if the world ends on Wednesday, let me just say now I told you so

I had a bet that it was going to end. The bookie gave me a squillion to one.
If it comes in, you wont see me for dust.
I’ll be right out of here and all my financial problems will be over.

2. Pf. What we be like if we all sat around agreeing about the same book all the time? I’ll tell you what we’d be like: Christians.

We can’t let any old riff raff watch Aunty!

I started watching Book Club but found myself too intensely irritated by the man in the baseball cap.
I have the opposite experience with C.O.D. I enjoyed it and so lent it to a few friends who immediately adopted it as…the single greatest work of fiction ever.
I think G.G. would kick kittens if she thought it was going to get her some controversy airplay out of it.

Did you find Augusten annoying because he’d never read a book til age 24 and then he became a bestselling writer? Or was it his cap? I thought he was lovely
I admire G.G’s disagreeableness. I have to say I didn’t agree when they were going on about C.O.D being filled with rage. I didn’t feel the rage when I read it. Mainly I was too busy laughing

I haven’t read Confederacy of Dunces. I’m afraid to, in case I hate it and my faith in Marieke is shaken.

You’re sounding a bit cult-like there Ben. Just a bit
