The award was won by a very Melburnian-looking Melburnian, wearing an archaic tweed jacket, called Joel Gailer for his piece Hot process. Basically what he does is he takes out advertisements in arty magazines and the ad is then the piece of art. The lithograph ad which won is on page 89 of the Art Almanac and it’s basically a black background with white font that says “Printmaking is so hot right now.” The magazine cost $4 and the best part is you can wind up your significant other when you get home by telling them you’ve bought the winning piece
I loved Hot process. I also loved Marion Manifold’s View of Geelong toward great great grandmother Stinton’s garden and Martin King’s Flooding is a dream
I went to the opening last night with BigSquib and my dad and it must be said that I spent the greater part of it listening to the Domnicks and then arguing about which guitarist was Nick Sheppard, ex-member of The Clash. (Personally I thought the English accent was a pretty good clue)
BigSquib spent the evening complaining about mosquito bites (they didn’t bite me at all so I was glad we’d brought her with us) and saying things like, ‘Oh my God those old people over there are actually head bobbing’
