When I saw an advertisement for the musical Keating on ABC1 a few weeks ago I told MrSquib it was high time we got ABC2. We got ABC2 last weekend so I got to watch it and MrSquib, only a recent Australian and not familiar with any of it, probably wondered why his wife was cackling so contentedly away at a musical about an ex-prime minister. I wish I’d seen it when it came to Perth. The music was much better than I thought and it brought back a lot of memories

Paul Keating was the first PM I ever voted for (isn’t that romantic) and the very day after the election I left to go to London for the second time. I took a picture of Keating with me, the cover from the Rolling Stone, and when I got to my cramped and overpriced bedsit in South Kensington, I stuck Keating on the wall

And over a year later when I was 20 and I had my first child and I was breastfeeding at funny times in the night, the only thing on the telly was Parliament. And there was Keating and it was actually entertaining. Up until then I’d never realised that politics could be so interesting

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… sigh… these days I vote for the Greens. Anyway great show and so funny to see Keating get up and have a dance and Cheryl in the audience having a giggle during the duet with Gareth. The band were fabulous, as were the singers, especially the one who played John Howard

PS. If anyone knows how I can tune this new channel in to our HD DVD player so I can record things, please let me know, ta

I’m afraid that whilst the Pea was on her eight week holiday with her dad, our set top box was unplugged in a fit of pique and tossed into a corner of the room to wait for her to return and set it up again…someone in this house has a bad temper where electrical devices are concerned…I think it’s the cat…
