Sing a Song for Us Tonight is a segment where people choose a song that is special to them and explain why. Today’s guest is Rocafuentes and he’s chosen How Soon is Now by The Smiths. Here’s his story, thanks Roca
“I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar” This song probably just about sums up my life during the early 80’s. Shy, quiet, and laughed at because I was always alone.
It was uncanny how someone could write a song that fitted my circumstances so well at the time. I’m sure there were plenty of other people that could stake a claim to this song too.
The song is supposed to be related to being gay – but I believe it can be for anyone….”I am human and I need to be loved just like everybody else does.”
The lines that most hit home for me are at the end, “There’s a club, if you’d like to go you could meet somebody who really loves you/ So you go, and you stand on your own/ And you leave on your own/And you go home /And you cry/And you want to die”.
I know what a sad pathetic loser I was eh……enjoy…! (Roca)
If you’ve got a story about a song you’d like to share, even if you’ve done one before, please email me, thanks

As you said I think most of us have been there
I’m still finding it hard to like The Smiths. I was just beginning to like them and then that whole thing with Morrissey… I don’t know
The lyrics are brilliant though

It’s a wonderful song. A classic.
They were talking about it last week in a BBC prog about ‘B Sides’ because, originally, it was released as the 7″ B side to “William, it was Really Nothing”.
According to reports, M&M weren’t that fussed because they considered they were an album band and had it destined as a key track on the next LP.
Anyway, it was later rereleased as an A side.

Oh Good Grief!
It’s got one of my appalling lectures in it!
Nah, he’s slightly strange but I love his stuff.

lol
Don’t worry I started pontificating about whether we can separate art from ideology

I’m not sure.
The steam from a kettle is usually good for that sort of thing.

Thanks Squib
I’m just polishing my glass eye as that song brought a tear to it.
Great song…one of the Smith’s best

Hi Squib, found you through Myninja - I’m saving up hoovering up everything here for a time less proximate to beddy-byes.
I must say, when I read your invitation to the ninja to contribute to sing a song I had this beautiful picture of shy-as-hell bloggers droning away karaoke-style to their favourite songs on grainy, cubey webcams. How does he or she convince them to do it? I wondered.
Then I get here and, of course, people just pick their songs and stick to dealing with them as they are best equipped: by writing about them.
And it’s still cool.
Keep it rolling, kiddo.

Hi Franzy! Karaoke - what a terrible thought!
Thanks, glad you like it - of course now I will be hounding you to do one too

Hmmmm.
Thank goodness Franzy hasn’t seen my back bedroom organ recital/cosy conversation with my soft toy, Grommet.

Yes, I don’t think the world is ready for that yet
