How to Make Those Fabric Button Hairbands
You will need the following:
buttons for covering and the plastic tool which can be got in various quantities and sizes here
(the one shown here is a 1 and a half inch button i.e 3.81 cms diam)
small wire cutters/pliers
craft wire
fabric
snag-free hair elastic
plain tissues
material scissors

Take the cutter/pliers and remove the wire loop from the button back by squeezing it (you need to remove it because it is not big enough for the hair band to fit through)

Cut a small piece of wire and bend it like so

Put the wire U over a hair elastic and through the backing, turn it over and bend the wires back like so
Cut a circle of fabric that covers the button and also leaves a good 2-3 cm around the outside. I also cut out a tissue circle the same size to place behind the fabric and prevent the metal shining through. You should probably use something else like that stuff you iron on but tissue seems to work OK

Place the button shell face down on the fabric/tissue circles

Hold firmly and push into the button tool

Push the button back firmly down on all sides

Push your finished fabric hair band out of the tool and voila!

If you’d rather I make them and send them to you then email me
[a special good luck with it to Kelmo!]

well done on the step by step! they look absolutely gorgeous & very saleable. great holiday activity. is the cardboard circle to just protect the metal whilst you are making it?

Hi Meg thanks, no the cardboard circle is just a template for cutting the fabric

I thought you said it was easy!
I’ll give it a try, but think I’ll use patterned material. There’s no way I could centre something properly on the button and it would end up lopsided, off kilter, crooked and (as the girls would say) “mental”.
I’ll keep you updated.

I think you and Kelmo are just being too modest
