Right so I bought 150 empty matchboxes (without the bit on the side that lights a match) for a craft activity for LittleSquib’s party
MrSquib: You can’t call them matchboxes
Me: Don’t be silly, of course I’m going to call them matchboxes
MrSquib: Don’t you think you should call them small boxes?
Me: No, I think I should call them matchboxes. You’re not serious?
MrSquib: Well I’m sure the parents are really going to appreciate that. The school’s just gone on an excursion where a ranger told them not to play with matches and now you’re getting them to play with matches
Me: Matchboxes
MrSquib: Same thing
BigSquib: Yeah Mum, I think you should just call them boxes. They haven’t got matches in them so technically they’re not matchboxes
Me: No! No, every child should know what a matchbox is. Didn’t you ever used to make things out of matchboxes when you were a kid?
MrSquib: Nope. I don’t think the other parents are going to be too impressed, not when they get home from our party and Little Johnny burns their house down

They don’t contain matches and don’t have the bit to spark a match if they did contain any, so there’s really no relation to matches and I don’t think they can be called matchboxes.
Now, if you’re that adverse to calling them plain old boxes (or even wee boxes), then I suppose you can call them matchless boxes.
Glad they got there in time (only 4 pound sterling in shipping you say?)
Cute idea for crafts (almost as good as neon popsicle sticks).

(pssst Til you’re supposed to AGREE with me about them being matchboxes, didn’t you get the script?!)
Yes the shipping was unbelievably good. Now I’m surrounded by matchboxes and joggly eyes and pipecleaners and itty bitty stuff

For fuck’s sake, THEY ARE FUCKING MATCHBOXES!
I’m with you, Squibbeline.
And anyway, what’s wrong with using real matchboxes? We used to use real ones for ‘craft’, and none of us turned out to be arsons. We were taught how to safely strike a match.
Oh, and argument No.2: Are they suggesting we can’t call them ‘Matchbox Cars’ any more?
The modern world has mostly got it right, but there’s still some little bits that are completely stupid.

Thanks Persey! Matchboxes/Little boxes 2-2
There’s nothing wrong with real matchboxes but if I’d bought 150 of them what would I do with all the matches? Unless… unless…

But they’re not really matches either!!! there’s no little sparky bit at the end. Probably they should be called “little sticks”.

Little denuded match stick
All bare and pale and stark
Do you come in little boxes
Stripped of surface to spark
A little fire
To burn and consume and inflame
You’re as yet virginal little pining stick frame
