Sing a Song for Us Tonight is a segment where people choose a song that is special to them and explain why. Today’s guest is Matilda. She’s chosen The Police and that earbug De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da which will now be stuck in my head for the rest of the day, thanks Matilda!
I always smirk to myself when parents get all concerned if their children don’t have a vocabulary numbering 100s of words by the time they’re a year old. Yes, sometimes the concern is justified (I have an autistic step-child) but in most cases when a baby is ready to start talking, they’ll let you know (and then they don’t shut up until the teenage years when communication consists of them rolling their eyes at you and uttering “whatever”).
I remember the moment my daughter (now an ancient 25) uttered her first words - yes, she bypassed the word stage (nary a “mama” out of her) and started off with a sentence of sorts right off the bat.
We were in the car - she in the back, safely buckled into her baby seat and silently gazing out the window and I had 104.5 CHUM FM on the radio (Today’s Best Music!) The DJ announced that The Police were up next and I shook with excitement (okay, not quite, but I was a fan).
Presently the strains of that not quite classic song came over the radio waves and filled my car: De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da Is all I want to say to you.
I must admit I sat there thinking “Oh, its that dumb song” (definitely not one of my favourites), but a little someone in the back seat was certainly impressed. As the song finished and some forgettable advertisement came on, my wee one, who had never formed a word before in her entire life (yes, all those months) starting warbling:
Do Do Do DoDo DoDo Da Da Da DaDaDaDa all I say to yoo oo oo oo DoDo DoDo DaDaDaDaDaDa
It was all rather shocking and I had to pull over to the side of the road to compose myself. To this day, whenever that song is played, I smile wistfully as I picture that drooling little mouth and hear the sound of her sweet gibberish. [Matilda]

Lovely choice.
I love that song. I’ve sung it off and on since 1984. It’s so joyous.

Can you believe the embedding was disabled on YouTube. That really annoys me

I love that one too but “the bed’s too big” is my fav police song. But any song associated with cute stories about one’s offspring are super dooper in my view. Of course my daughter’s first singalong song was The Pogue’s Christmas in New York. I never said I was a good mother….

She didn’t sing the rude words. She loved the ‘happy christmas!’ part sung really loud and with enthusiasm. Most toddlers would I guess. Raised some eyebrows when people called in though.
