music: my daddy was a bankrobber

Have been playing a double CD in the car, The Essential Clash. The kids aren’t impressed, especially with their earlier stuff on disc one, but I just know it will grow on them! LittleSquib (4) still prefers The White Stripes which I’m sure you’ll agree is a huge improvement on The Wiggles

Have a slight problem with The Clash. They reckon they never sold out but how come they got so mega in America. You don’t make it big there as an English band unless you put in a load of time, compromise yourself and ingratiate like it’s going out of fashion.
I cant find a decent live recording of especially the earlier stuff. Strummer wasn’t that much of a singer in the traditional sense and everything I’ve heard just sounds like a row.

That said, Complete Control is just such a wonderful song and Rock the Casbah aint far behind. Hitsville UK is another.

To convert the kids, play Complete Control on repeat VERY loud in the car…they’ll end up gagging for more…eventually

Talking of selling out to America…..we could mention one monsieur Morrissey….but I won’t.

Will have a listen to it Wart. I’ve mainly been playing the second disk which I really like a lot (though let’s face it, if I were a true Clash devotee I’d not have anything as uncool as a double CD of their greatest hits!)

    “London Calling” (Jones-Strummer) – 3:20
“The Guns of Brixton” (Paul Simonon) – 3:10
    “Clampdown” (Jones-Strummer) – 3:50
    “Rudie Can’t Fail” (Jones-Strummer) – 3:29
    “Lost in the Supermarket” (Jones-Strummer) – 3:47
    “Jimmy Jazz” (Jones-Strummer) – 3:55
“Train in Vain (Stand by Me)” (Jones-Strummer) – 3:11
    “Bankrobber” (Jones-Strummer) – 4:35
    “The Magnificent Seven” – 5:33
    “Ivan Meets G.I. Joe” – 3:07
    “Stop the World” – 2:33
    “Somebody Got Murdered” – 3:34
    “The Street Parade” – 3:29
    “Broadway” - 4:56
“This Is Radio Clash” – 4:11
    “Ghetto Defendant” – 4:44
    “Rock the Casbah” – 3:42
    “Straight to Hell” – 5:30
    “Should I Stay or Should I Go” – 3:08
    “This Is England” (Rhodes-Strummer) – 3:50

Not a bad selection though. No Complete Control, No White Riot or White Man in Hammersmith Palais but White Riot sounds dated now and I would rather listen to West Indians singing reggae. Once you’ve listened to Clint Eastwood and General Saint performing “Stop That Train” or people like Steel Pulse, it’s hard to take “White British” reggae seriously.

My fave punk band were The Damned [hoots of derision from punk purists].. Machine Gun Etiquette for a blasting punk album and the superb Phantasmagoria for later, more harmonious mid 80s, stuff

I’m not a reggae man per se. It’s ok in small doses.

Reggae does have its place mind. It’s good background music in between bands at an outdoor concert. Keeps peoples feet tapping and the concert atmosphere going - even when’s its peeing down and a mud bath…!! (been to plenty of those in my time - hopefully some more to come in the future MrsSquib……??)

Oh! Is that a promise of a festival tour of Europe MrSquib? Can I take that nice tartan rug to put over my knees (it probably gets a bit drafty outside)

One bandwho didn’t jump onto the american bandwagon and sell out were the Jam
    Superb
Songs related to the goings on and life in the UK at that time (hasn’t changed much come to think of it)
You should take a listen some time Mrs Squib…….
    Thats Entertainment

That’s another one in the glovebox but as you know LittleSquib forces me to play the same track on Icky Thump ad nauseam

I don’t believe anyone ’sold out’ anyway. There’s nothing wrong with being popular on both sides of the Atlantic, you whiny malcontents

    Talk about tall poppy syndrome
